Nanban is built around a single historical voyage: in 1618, ambassador Hasekura Tsunenaga's galleon carried a delegation of samurai home from Europe via Mexico and the Philippines, its hull loaded with leather, spices, resins and exotic woods. ARQUISTE founder Carlos Huber built the fragrance's brief around that cargo hold, and Rodrigo Flores-Roux turned it into a dense, smoky leather-and-incense composition.

THREE MOMENTS, ONE EVOLVING SCENT
Malabar black pepper and Persian saffron arrive first, sharp and warming, with a black tea accord adding a dry, tannic edge. Chinese osmanthus threads a soft apricot-leather floralcy through it, and the composition reads dense rather than building gradually, with the leather accord already perceptible this early.
This is the fragrance's signature accord — the same Spanish leather treatment perfumer Rodrigo Flores-Roux used in Carner Barcelona's Sandor 70's, historically built from florals, citruses, spices, civet and musk to scent gloves. Coffee absolute adds a roasted bitterness that pairs unexpectedly well with the sandalwood underneath, while myrrh starts wrapping the whole accord in a softer, more resinous cloud.
Frankincense and styrax build toward a genuinely dense, church-incense weight, while copaiba balsam adds a sweet, faintly citrusy resin underneath. Cade — an oil distilled from juniper wood — supplies the smoky, almost tar-like darkness that defines the drydown.

Rodrigo Flores-Roux has worked with ARQUISTE founder Carlos Huber since the house's earliest days, translating Huber's historical research into scent across releases including Èl and Anima Dulcis. For Nanban, he took Huber's brief — a 1618 galleon's cargo hold of leather, spice, resin and wood — and built it into a dense, texturally rich composition that stays legible even at its most layered.
