ROUGE SMOKING

Bergamot and a dark cherry accord open bright and sharp, before black vanilla and heliotrope soften it in the heart, and ambroxan, cashmeran, tonka bean and labdanum settle it into a warm, musky, powdered base.

SECTION 01 · PORTRAIT

A love letter to Pigalle, without a single flower.

Amélie Bourgeois built Rouge Smoking around Paris's Pigalle district — its red neon, its late nights, its particular mix of boldness and elegance. BDK Parfums stages it formally into head, heart and base: bergamot and a cherry accord open it, black vanilla and heliotrope carry the middle, and ambroxan, cashmeran, tonka bean and labdanum close it. It reached the FiFi Awards France finals in 2019.

Assumedly oriental, contemporary oriental. A sensual and chic perfume marked with elegance, Rouge Smoking is like sewn with silk filaments and precious leather.

THREE MOMENTS, ONE EVOLVING SCENT

See how the fragrance changes.

Atmospheric interpretation of bright bergamot against a dark cherry accord.
HEAD NOTES

Bright bergamot against a dark cherry accord.

Italian bergamot opens the fragrance clean and citrusy, immediately cut by a dark cherry accord that BDK's own copy calls the fragrance's "red side." Pink berries add a faint spiced sparkle. The opening reads genuinely candy-like — closer to cherry cola than to fruit itself — which is exactly the nostalgic, playful register the house was aiming for.

CITRUSFRUITYSPARKLING
Atmospheric interpretation of black vanilla and heliotrope, without a single flower.
HEART NOTES

Black vanilla and heliotrope, without a single flower.

BDK Parfums states plainly that Rouge Smoking is built "without flowers" — its floral-adjacent softness comes entirely from heliotrope, an almond-and-powder note rather than a literal bloom. Black vanilla runs alongside it, described by Bourgeois herself as representing the fragrance's "silk."

POWDERYSWEETSOFT
Atmospheric interpretation of ambroxan, cashmeran and labdanum, worn like leather.
BASE NOTES

Ambroxan, cashmeran and labdanum, worn like leather.

The base is where Bourgeois's own "silk and leather" framing resolves: musks, black vanilla and tonka bean are the silk; labdanum is the leather. Ambroxan and cashmeran add a modern, diffusive warmth, while tonka bean deepens the sweetness into something closer to amber than dessert.

AMéLIE BOURGEOIS, WORKING IN SILK AND LEATHER

The perfumer behind the portrait

Amélie Bourgeois, a perfumer at Flair Paris, composed Rouge Smoking for BDK Parfums in 2018, describing it through her own metaphor: musks, black vanilla and tonka bean as silk, labdanum as leather. It reached the FiFi Awards France finals that year. She later revisited it for the 2024 Extrait alongside fellow perfumer Margaux Le Paih Guérin.

“Musks, black vanilla, and tonka bean represent the silk, while labdanum embodies the leather. Cherry and pepper reveal its red side.”
