SECTION 01 · PORTRAIT

A brighter kind of court perfume.

Named for Louis XIV's most formidable mistress, Athénaïs trades the house's usual rose-and-vetiver weight for something citrus-forward and much lighter on its feet. Neroli and yuzu open loud, orange blossom keeps it floral rather than sour, and tonka bean settles the whole thing into a soft, powdery finish that lasts far longer than the sparkling opening suggests.

It's built on a contrast: sparkling citrus energy against a soft, powdery landing.

THREE MOMENTS, ONE EVOLVING SCENT

See how the fragrance changes.

Atmospheric interpretation of citrus arrives loud and sparkling, closer to fresh-cut fruit than to cologne.
00:00 — NEROLI, BERGAMOT AND YUZU

Citrus arrives loud and sparkling, closer to fresh-cut fruit than to cologne.

The opening doesn't ease in. Neroli and yuzu hit first, bright and slightly bitter, with bergamot rounding the edges so it reads as fruit rather than cleaning-product citrus. It's the most energetic few minutes of the whole fragrance.

CITRUSBRIGHTSPARKLING
Atmospheric interpretation of white flowers take over, keeping the citrus energy but softening its edges.
00:35 — ORANGE BLOSSOM AND JASMINE

White flowers take over, keeping the citrus energy but softening its edges.

Orange blossom and jasmine move in before the citrus fully fades, so the two overlap rather than hand off cleanly. The florals are honeyed and a little indolic rather than crisp, giving the heart real body instead of just perfuming the citrus.

FLORALWHITE FLOWERHONEYED
Atmospheric interpretation of tonka bean and amber pull everything down into a warm, powdery finish.
02:30 — TONKA BEAN, VANILLA AND AMBER

Tonka bean and amber pull everything down into a warm, powdery finish.

The citrus and florals both fade well before the base does. What's left is tonka bean's soft, almond-like powderiness, backed by vanilla and a smooth amber that keeps it from turning too sweet. This is the stage that actually lasts — closer to a worn cashmere scarf than to a fruit bowl.

THE HOUSE BEHIND ATHéNAïS

House authorship, without an invented individual credit.

Parfums de Marly's official material for Athénaïs credits founder Julien Sprecher with the fragrance's creative concept — the deliberate contrast between neroli and tonka bean — but does not name an individual perfumer. Parffolio credits the house rather than assigning an unverified nose to the composition.

“Athénaïs embodies the feminine energy that fascinates as much as it liberates. I wanted to mingle neroli and tonka bean, two contrasting notes, and weave a tie between history and a distinct facet of femininity today.”
