BEE

Orange and ginger syrup open onto a royal jelly accord, then meadow florals give way to a waxy, resinous base of benzoin, labdanum and tonka — honey as habitat rather than dessert.

SECTION 01 · PORTRAIT

The hive, not the honey pot.

Zoologist builds every fragrance around an animal and its habitat, and Bee takes that literally: rather than a honey soliflore, Cristiano Canali composed the whole hive — royal jelly, beeswax, pollen-drained meadow flowers and resin. Notably, honey itself doesn't appear in the note list at all. An Art & Olfaction Awards finalist in 2020, it runs at 18% extrait concentration.

“The rich aroma of honey captivates, while alluring florals, royal jelly, animalic beeswax and regal incense unite to create a buzz.”

THREE MOMENTS, ONE EVOLVING SCENT

See how the fragrance changes.

Atmospheric interpretation of it opens bright, then immediately turns viscous.
00:00 — ORANGE, GINGER, ROYAL JELLY

It opens bright, then immediately turns viscous.

Orange gives a brief citrus lift before ginger syrup takes over — not dry spice but something genuinely syrupy and thick. The royal jelly accord arrives underneath almost at once, adding a faintly medicinal, protein-rich sweetness that reads distinctly of hive rather than of honey jar.

CITRUSSYRUPYGOLDEN
Atmospheric interpretation of broom, mimosa and heliotrope, heavy with pollen.
00:45 — THE POLLEN-DRAINED MEADOW

Broom, mimosa and heliotrope, heavy with pollen.

The heart is a meadow rather than a bouquet. Broom brings a honeyed, slightly hay-like density, mimosa adds powdery yellow softness, and heliotrope pushes toward almond and vanilla. Orange flower keeps a thread of the opening's citrus running through it. Together they read less like cut flowers than like flowers a bee has already worked over.

POLLENPOWDERYHONEYED
Atmospheric interpretation of the comb itself: waxy, resinous, quietly animalic.
03:00 — WAX, RESIN AND TONKA

The comb itself: waxy, resinous, quietly animalic.

Canali has said benzoin adds a subtle smokiness that contrasts with vanilla's tenderness, while labdanum supplies the final warmth and sandalwood brings creaminess and texture. Beeswax is deliberately overdosed here in a way modern perfumery rarely allows, and it's what keeps the drydown from collapsing into a straightforward gourmand — this stays waxy and faintly animalic to the end.

CRISTIANO CANALI CAME TO PERFUMERY FROM PHARMACY

The perfumer behind the portrait

Cristiano Canali trained as a pharmacist in Italy before moving into perfumery, and cites sandalwood as his personal link between the two disciplines. He also names beeswax, castoreum, civet and ambergris among his favourite materials — an unusual preference that made him a natural match for a Zoologist brief about the inside of a hive.

“I also have a predilection for animal derivates such as castoreum, civet, ambergris and beeswax for their unique odor profile and warmth, even in small traces.”
