Begin the portrait

A SOLAR FLORAL-WOODY ICON WITH A DRY GREEN PULSE

Brightness, colour and movement settle into one of modern perfumery’s most recognisable vetiver signatures.

Bal d’Afrique begins in a rush of yellow light: African marigold, bergamot, South African buchu and blackcurrant create a tart, herbal and softly fruity opening. Cyclamen, violet and jasmine petals turn that energy floral without making it heavy. Cedarwood, tonka bean, musks and vetiver then draw the composition into a smooth, dry trail. Its appeal lies in the balance—sunny but not sugary, polished but still tactile, familiar yet difficult to reduce to a single note.

“Bal d’Afrique pays homage to the cultural heartbeat and enduring influence of Africa over time.”

Every stage remains visible on every device. Select a note to see its context inside the composition.

Atmospheric interpretation of buchu, marigold and bergamot flash against dark berries.
00:00 — THE GOLDEN PULSE

Buchu, marigold and bergamot flash against dark berries.

South African buchu introduces an aromatic green edge. African marigold brings a warm, slightly bitter floral colour, while bergamot lifts the opening with sparkling peel. Blackcurrant adds tart fruit and a faint leafy shadow, keeping the brightness vivid rather than clean-cut.

SOLARTARTAROMATIC
Atmospheric interpretation of cyclamen and violet move through a light veil of jasmine petals.
00:40 — THE VIOLET DANCE

Cyclamen and violet move through a light veil of jasmine petals.

The heart is floral but airy. Cyclamen contributes watery translucence, violet supplies a cool powdery tint and jasmine petals soften the space between them. Together they preserve the opening’s sense of movement while shifting the colour from gold into mauve and cream.

AIRYVIOLETTEXTURED
Atmospheric interpretation of cedarwood and vetiver dry the light down over tonka and musks.
03:30 — THE VETIVER TRACE

Cedarwood and vetiver dry the light down over tonka and musks.

Tonka bean rounds the transition with restrained warmth, while cedarwood adds a clean pencil-dry structure. Musks smooth the edges and vetiver remains the lasting signature: earthy, grassy, woody and elegant, carrying a subtle echo of the opening’s green bitterness.

THE PERFUMER BEHIND THE MODERN ICON

Jérôme Epinette turns brightness into movement and a memorable dry trail.

Jérôme Epinette built Bal d’Afrique around contrast and movement: bright citrus and marigold, tart green-fruit facets, translucent florals and a dry vetiver-cedar foundation. The composition’s lasting identity comes less from weight than from the way these textures overlap. Current BYREDO product material does not display an individual perfumer credit; the attribution is retained from Epinette’s own published discussion of the fragrance and longstanding industry documentation.

“We were trying to create something surprising, different, and with a wonderful sillage that people talked about.”
