A self-taught perfumer who joined Chanel's fragrance laboratory as a chromatography chemist in 1973 before developing his own signature style at Symrise — built on musk, amber and white flowers, and known for compositions he strips down to only what is essential. His work spans Musc Ravageur, Gucci Envy, Guerlain L'Instant and Bond No. 9 New Haarlem, among many others often uncredited on the bottle. His current Parffolio portrait is Éditions de Parfums Frédéric Malle Musc Ravageur.
