Francis Kurkdjian built masculin Pluriel around the fougère accord that defines most men's classics, then deliberately removed its usual briskness. Grapefruit opens it, brief and a little bitter, before lavender absolute and a soft leather accord settle in alongside cedar, patchouli and vetiver — calmer and creamier than the genre usually allows.
It reads as fougère with the volume turned down — the structure is all there, just softened into something closer to skin.

THREE MOMENTS, ONE EVOLVING SCENT
Grapefruit leads with a green, slightly bitter edge rather than a sweet citrus burst. It's the only top note in the whole composition, and it fades within minutes, handing off to the lavender-leather heart faster than most fougères allow.
Lavender absolute from Provence carries most of this stage, backed by a leather accord built to feel soft rather than harsh, and cedarwood adding a dry, pencil-shaving quality underneath. This is where masculin Pluriel actually distinguishes itself from a classic barbershop fougère — there's no sharp aromatic bite here.
Vetiver brings an earthy, smoky root quality and patchouli adds depth without turning sweet or heavy. Francis Kurkdjian built masculin Pluriel as part of a diptych with féminin Pluriel — his own reinterpretation of two classic genres, fougère for him and floral chypre for her. Rather than modernizing the fougère with sharper, louder materials, he pulled in the opposite direction: the same grapefruit-lavender-leather-woods structure, deliberately softened.
